How the day runs

A Zion Christian Church funeral is led by the church, and that changes what a programme is for. The church’s own leadership directs the spiritual parts of the service without needing a printed script — the singing, the prayer and the order of the church’s participation are carried by discipline and memory, not by a running sheet. The booklet exists for the family and for visitors who are not of the church.

What the family fills in is around the edges: the biography, the photographs, the family tributes, and the acknowledgements. Family tributes are kept brief and are scheduled with the church leadership rather than assumed — agree the number and the length in advance, and print only what has been agreed. Services are often long, and congregational singing carries the transitions where another tradition would print a cue.

What to print, and how much

Keep the booklet simple and print a lot of it. ZCC funerals draw large congregations and the visitors are the ones who most need the biography and the acknowledgements. Four pages on a folded A4 sheet is usually right — cover photograph, the life story, the order as agreed with the leadership, and the family’s thanks on the back.

Do we print the full order if the church leads it?

Print the shape, not a script. List the items so visitors can follow, but do not attempt to notate the church’s own parts in detail — they are led, not read. Agree the printed order with the leadership before it goes to the printer.

How many family tributes are usual?

Few, and short. One or two, of a couple of minutes each, scheduled with the church leadership. The weight of a ZCC service sits in the church’s own participation rather than in a sequence of speeches.

What should the family focus on in the booklet?

The life story, the photographs and the acknowledgements. Those are the parts only the family can supply, and they are what guests read and keep. Give the biography real space — a hundred and fifty words that say something specific beats a page of dates.

Using this order

Open it in the editor and every item becomes editable. Set the tribute sequence first — it is the part that has to be agreed with the family rather than typed, and everything else moves around it. Draw hymns from the hymns library and readings from the readings library, and the booklet lays itself out as you go. Whoever is leading has the final word — bring them the draft before it goes to the printer.
