How the day runs

This is the order most South African families will recognise, and its defining feature is the programme director — the master of ceremonies who announces each item, calls each speaker by name, and keeps a service with many voices from drifting. The day usually starts early: a service from around eight or nine on a Saturday morning, the procession to the cemetery late morning, and the meal at the family home from midday.

Tributes move outward in a respected sequence — immediate family, then grandchildren, then the church, then colleagues and friends — and the sequence matters socially more than it does liturgically. Getting it wrong on the printed page causes real offence. Two items that families forget until the morning: the vote of thanks, and the announcement of funeral arrangements, which comes before the procession and tells the congregation where the graveside and the meal are.

What to print, and how much

South African funerals draw larger crowds than the family estimates, and the graveside draws people who did not come to the church. Print generously — two hundred copies for a service the family expects a hundred and fifty at is not waste. Keep the format to a single folded A4 sheet if the budget is tight; the order, a photograph and the acknowledgements fit comfortably in four pages.

Questions families ask

What does the programme director do?

They run the service: welcoming the congregation, announcing each item, calling speakers by name, and keeping to time. They are not the minister — the minister preaches and conducts the religious parts. Name the programme director on the front of the booklet so guests know who is speaking.

What order should the tributes go in?

Family first, then grandchildren, then church and organisations, then colleagues and friends. Within each group, seniority is usually respected. Confirm the list with the elders in the family before printing — a name in the wrong place is remembered.

What are the funeral arrangements announcements?

A short item near the end where the programme director tells the congregation the route to the cemetery, where the meal is served, and any transport arrangements. Print it, because the people who most need it are at the back and will not hear it clearly.
