How a Catholic mass service moves

A Requiem Mass follows the Church’s own liturgy — the programme’s job is to help the whole congregation, Catholic or not, follow it. The Liturgy of the Word and of the Eucharist are fixed; the family’s choices live in the readings, the music, and who brings the gifts.

How the day runs

A Requiem Mass runs to the Church’s liturgy, not the family’s. The parish office will confirm the readings, the priest will confirm the music, and the family’s real choices sit in three places: which lectionary readings are used, who reads them, and who brings the gifts to the altar. Expect a full Mass of about an hour and fifteen minutes, often preceded by a vigil or rosary the evening before.

The programme’s job here is different from other traditions. It is not a running order for the family’s benefit — it is a guide that lets the half of the congregation who are not Catholic follow along and know when to stand, sit and respond. Printing the congregational responses is the single most useful thing you can do. Tributes are brief and are usually placed before Mass begins or after Communion, at the priest’s direction.

What to print, and how much

Print more than you think. A requiem draws parishioners as well as family, and the congregation uses the booklet continuously rather than glancing at it once. Six pages is common — the order of Mass, the readings in full, the responses, and the hymns. Confirm the final text with the parish office before printing; a programme that names the wrong readings gets noticed from the front.

The Order of Christian Funerals provides set options — an Old Testament reading, a responsorial psalm, a New Testament reading and a Gospel. Your parish will give you the list. You choose from it rather than bringing your own text, and the Gospel is read by the priest or deacon.

Can a family member give a eulogy at the Mass?

Practice varies by parish. Many priests place words of remembrance before Mass begins or after Communion, kept to a few minutes, rather than in place of the homily. Ask early — it changes where the tribute sits in your printed order.

What is the Final Commendation?

The closing rite of the funeral Mass: the coffin is sprinkled and incensed while the Song of Farewell is sung, and the body is commended to God before the procession to the cemetery. It replaces the vote of thanks you would see in other traditions.
