How the day runs

Umlindelo — the night vigil — is the Friday night before a Saturday funeral, and in many South African families it carries more of the community’s grief than the funeral does. It is held at the family home, usually in a tent in the yard, and it runs late. Church groups arrive in uniform, sing their sets, and give way to the next. The family is not expected to organise the singing; the groups organise themselves.

What the family provides is the space, the food and a simple order that tells arrivals what is happening. The programme director opens and closes and hands off to the church groups in between. Because people arrive throughout the evening, anything printed should make sense to someone who walks in at ten o’clock — the shape of the night, not a timetable that is already out of date.

What to print, and how much

Keep it to one sheet and print it cheaply. The vigil is not where the keepsake budget goes — the funeral booklet the next morning is. Hymn words on one side and the order of the evening on the other is exactly right, in a type size that works by tent light and a torch, which means larger than you would normally set it.

What is umlindelo?

The night vigil held before the funeral, usually the Friday night before a Saturday burial. It is a night of singing, prayer and scripture at the family home, where the community gathers around the family before the formal service.

Do we need to feed everyone at the vigil?

Something is normally served — tea, soup, bread — through the night rather than a sit-down meal. The full meal comes after the burial. Ask the church group or the neighbours; in most communities this is organised collectively rather than by the bereaved family.

Should the vigil order match the funeral programme?

They are separate documents and should look it. The vigil sheet is a working page for a long night; the funeral booklet is the keepsake. Reusing the funeral cover on the vigil sheet is a nice touch if the design is already done.

Open it in the editor and every item becomes editable. Keep it short and put the hymn words in — the night runs on singing, and a detailed schedule will be out of date within the hour. Draw hymns from the hymns library and readings from the readings library, and the booklet lays itself out as you go. Whoever is leading has the final word — bring them the draft before it goes to the printer.
