How a Christian (general) service moves

The broadly Protestant shape most South African and international funerals follow when no denomination is named: hymns and prayer carrying the congregation in, the Word read and preached at the centre, and thanks spoken before the committal.

How the day runs

The vigil is the evening before the funeral, and it belongs to the people who arrive rather than to a printed programme. Singing, prayer and scripture carry the night — often for hours — with people coming and going as they can. It is held at the family home more often than at a church, in a tent or a cleared room, and it is where the community physically surrounds the family.

The order for a vigil should therefore be a shape, not a schedule. Print the items so those arriving know what is happening and what will be asked of them, but do not print times. The service is led from the front by whoever the family has asked, and the singing between items lasts as long as it lasts. That flexibility is the point of the night.

What to print, and how much

A single sheet, printed on both sides, is plenty — many families print nothing at all for the vigil and save the booklet for the funeral. If you do print, print the hymns rather than the order, since singing is what the night is made of and the words are what people need in a dim room. Photocopying is entirely acceptable here.

Questions families ask

How long does a vigil last?

Several hours, often from evening until late, sometimes through the night. People arrive and leave as they are able. There is no expectation that any one person stays for all of it except the immediate family.

Do we need a programme for the vigil?

Not really. Many families print nothing. If you print anything, print hymn words — they are what the room actually uses. Save the proper booklet for the funeral itself.

Who leads the vigil?

A minister, a church elder, or a respected member of the community the family asks. It does not require ordained leadership, and in many families it is led by the church group the person belonged to.

Using this order

Open it in the editor and every item becomes editable. Keep it short and put the hymn words in — the night runs on singing, and a detailed schedule will be out of date within the hour. Draw hymns from the hymns library and readings from the readings library, and the booklet lays itself out as you go. Whoever is leading has the final word — bring them the draft before it goes to the printer.
