Where the colour comes from
Green is the oldest of these associations and the least denominational: it is the colour of growth and continuation, used at funerals long before printing existed, in the form of laurel, olive and evergreen carried to the grave. The evergreen part is the point — the plants chosen were those that keep their leaves through winter, which was the whole message.
Beyond the booklet
It is the easiest colour to extend into the day, because greenery is the cheapest thing at any florist. Eucalyptus and fern fill an arrangement for a fraction of what flowers cost, and a green-toned programme sits naturally with them.
