The broadly Protestant shape most South African and international funerals follow when no denomination is named: hymns and prayer carrying the congregation in, the Word read and preached at the centre, and thanks spoken before the committal.

How the day runs

A Christian celebration of life keeps the faith of a funeral and drops its weight. The prayers, the scripture and the blessing remain; the tone is thanksgiving rather than mourning, and the language throughout is about a life completed rather than a life lost. Many are held after the burial, so there is no committal and no procession pressing on the timing.

Hymns of thanksgiving carry it better than hymns of lament, and ministers will usually have suggestions if asked. Give the tributes more room than a funeral allows — three or four voices from different parts of the life, with stories rather than summaries. Close with a blessing, which gives the room the familiar ending it is waiting for even in an unfamiliar kind of service.

What to print, and how much

Six to eight pages: the order, the hymns in full, a proper biography, and photographs from across the life rather than a single formal portrait. Because it is usually held after the burial and by invitation, numbers are predictable — print the list plus ten percent. This is a booklet people keep, so print it on decent paper.

Questions families ask

Can a celebration of life still have hymns and prayer?

Yes. A Christian celebration of life keeps the faith and changes the tone — thanksgiving rather than lament. Ask the minister to suggest hymns of thanksgiving; they sit very differently in the room from funeral hymns.

Is it held instead of a funeral?

Usually in addition to one. A private burial or cremation happens first, often with immediate family only, and the celebration follows for the wider circle. Some families hold only a celebration, which is entirely acceptable.

What should the cover say?

“Celebrating the life of” rather than “In loving memory of”. The wording sets expectations before anyone opens the booklet, and guests calibrate their behaviour from it.

Draw hymns from the hymns library and readings from the readings library, and the booklet lays itself out as you go. Whoever is leading has the final word — bring them the draft before it goes to the printer.
