How a Catholic mass service moves

A Requiem Mass follows the Church’s own liturgy — the programme’s job is to help the whole congregation, Catholic or not, follow it. The Liturgy of the Word and of the Eucharist are fixed; the family’s choices live in the readings, the music, and who brings the gifts.

How the day runs

A Catholic memorial takes one of two forms and you need to know which before you print. A Memorial Mass is a full Mass offered for the person, with the liturgy intact but no body present — no Final Commendation and no procession to the cemetery. A memorial service outside Mass is a liturgy of the word: readings, psalm, homily, prayers and a blessing, and it can be led by a deacon or a lay leader.

The parish decides which is appropriate and when it can be scheduled, since a Mass has to fit the parish diary. Family remembrances are usually placed after Communion at a Memorial Mass, or near the end of a service outside Mass. Confirm the form, the date and the readings with the parish office before anything is designed — a booklet printed for the wrong form is a booklet reprinted.

What to print, and how much

Six pages, and lead with the form of the service on the cover so guests know what they are attending. Print the readings and the congregational responses in full, exactly as the parish confirms them. If it is a Memorial Mass, the order of Mass takes most of the space; if it is a service outside Mass, there is far more room for the biography and photographs.

Can family speak at a Memorial Mass?

Words of remembrance are usually placed after Communion and kept brief, at the priest’s discretion. Ask the parish early, because it determines whether the tribute appears in your printed order and where.
