Thank-You & Acknowledgement Wording

The paragraph every family struggles to write in the hardest week — assembled from wording that has stood on a thousand back pages.

Tone
Thank people for…

Your acknowledgement

The family of our beloved mother thanks every friend, neighbour and colleague who has carried us through these days. We are especially grateful for the flowers and messages of sympathy, and for the prayers, hymns and words of comfort. We cannot thank each person by name — please know that every kindness was seen, and none will be forgotten.

Edit every word — this is a starting point in your voice, not a form letter.

What the acknowledgement is for

It is the family speaking back to the community — the one place in the programme where the direction of care reverses. It should thank broadly, name institutions rather than individuals, and end warmly. Three sentences carry it; the builder above keeps you inside that shape while every word stays editable.

Common questions

Where does the acknowledgement go?+

On the back page of the programme, under its own heading — and often again on printed thank-you cards sent in the weeks after. The same wording serves both.

Should we name people individually?+

Only institutions and roles — the church, the nursing staff, the funeral home. Naming individuals risks the one name forgotten; “we cannot thank each person by name” is the honest, standard escape.

When are thank-you cards sent?+

There is no deadline grief must meet. Two to six weeks after the service is common; a card sent in month three is still received with warmth.
