Psalm 34:17–19 — The Lord Is Nigh Unto Them of a Broken Heart

Why families choose it

Three verses, and two of them concede what many funeral readings will not: the righteous cry, and their afflictions are many. Faith did not spare this family this day, and the psalm does not pretend otherwise. What it claims instead is nearness — 'nigh unto them that are of a broken heart' — presence at the exact point of breaking. Chosen when the mourners themselves need addressing, or when the service calls for scripture that is brief, honest, and bearable.

Reading it aloud

This is three sentences and may take half a minute; do not pad it, and do not apologise for its length by hurrying. The old word 'nigh' simply means near — say it plainly and it will be understood. A good reading for graveside, for a child old enough to be trusted with it, or for anyone who fears breaking down in a long passage.
