2 Timothy 4:6–8 — I Have Fought a Good Fight

Why families choose it

These are the words of a man under sentence of death, taking stock and finding nothing missing. Read over a long and faithful life, the middle sentence says what every eulogy strains to say, in three plain verbs: fought, finished, kept. The honesty matters — Paul calls his death a departure, not a defeat — and so does the turn at the end: the crown is ‘not to me only,’ which quietly extends the same hope to everyone listening.

Reading it aloud

Three sentences; resist the urge to build them into a victory speech. Paul is calm here, and the reading works best level and unhurried, the way a man signs his last letter. Give ‘I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith’ equal weight on each clause. Pause before ‘Henceforth’ — the word turns from looking back to looking forward — and keep the last phrase wide enough to include the room.
